I'm Rebranding Valentine's Day

Published over 1 year ago • 3 min read

Happy February Trek Tribe!

I've got an IDEA and an OPPORTUNITY so read to the end! First, my suggested rebrand for Valentine's Day is L.E.A.D.

Love with EQ Awareness Day!

While Valentine’s Day and St. Valentine have a romantic and fascinating history and I am absolutely on board with showing appreciation for those we love:

>> The day can bring undue expectations for romantic relationships to “be ok” or “start over” or pressure a relationship to appear in a way that just isn’t reality for everyone on Feb 14th.

>> And I'm challenging you to consider l o v e BEYOND your romantic relationship. Like Love at work??? EXACTLY!

While the etymology of "love" certainly describes “deep affection arising from recognition of attractive qualities”

It ALSO describes:

>> “a feeling of benevolent attachment experienced towards a group or category of people” (like my team, my colleagues, my faith community, fellow concert goers who share my love for Sara Groves, Billy Joel, Regina Spektor, and CCR --yes, I’m eclectic)

>> “an act of kindness” (a smile or handwritten note go a long way)

>> “amicable or peaceable settlement”

>> “regard and consideration of one human being towards another”

It Really Works!

I learned a new word in researching for this newsletter: “companionate” love. A study published in Administrative Science Quarterly studied the effect of “companionate love” on the emotional and behavioral outcomes of employees. They found that employees who reported working in a loving, caring culture also reported higher levels of satisfaction and teamwork & showed up to work more often.

Harvard Business Review did a follow up study surveying 3,201 employees in seven different industries and also found that more companionate love [i.e. more collaboration, care, safeguarding one another’s feelings, and compassion] yielded higher job satisfaction, higher commitment to the organization and more accountability for performance.

This. Is. Love. with Emotional. Intelligence. Awareness AT WORK!

Emotional intelligence simply means using and applying your emotions effectively and constructively in everyday life.

As an Emotional Intelligence Coach, I LOVE supporting people and teams and leaders in building this skillset - because it works! Growing it provides more wholeheartedness for EVERYONE – at home, at work, at the committee meetings, in the line at the red light, with our children, spouse, colleagues, patients and customers!

Among MANY things, EQ is connected to:

>>Better boundaries >>Healthier communication >>Constructive conflict. >>Stronger relationships >>Ability to read and interpret social cues >Self confidence

and much more.

Take Your L.E.A.D. Higher

There are a variety of EQ self-assessments to do a quick check of your day-to-day EQ, including this one.

AND, the Enneagram IS an EQ tool! Learning more about the relationship of your Enneagram style with each emotion and how to leverage this insight can be transformative.

L.E.A.D. ers:

>Do you know what motivates your employees?

>Do you know what meaningful work looks like to them?

>Does your work culture support appropriate vulnerability and support?

>Do you have a well-being and mental health program?

Your EQ shows up pretty much ANY time you interface with another human being!

Hi Reader, I wanted to send a note in case you missed the incredible opportunity I shared last month to support women in healthcare leadership in developing nations with your tax deductible end-of-year gift. I have not previously shared with our Trek Tribe that I heartily donate a significant amount of my time and resources annually to not-for-profit organizations aligned with my mission. This project involves significantly more expense with travel and materials -AND- I would love to partner...

Hi Reader, Have you ever found yourself at a complete impasse? Stuck, trapped, spiraling and unable to move forward? Maybe you're in one now! In a nutshell, I call it the stuck. yuck. and it feels something like this... golf bunker Or maybe this... trapped chickens A few weeks ago a coaching client arrived for her last session of her coaching intensive ("Dr. Natalie Boot Camp" as some fondly -I think!) refer to it...) As she shared take-aways and actions steps, with a new twinkle in her eyes...
