Please Consider THIS End-of-Year Giving Opportunity

Published 5 months ago • 2 min read

Hi Reader,

I wanted to send a note in case you missed the incredible opportunity I shared last month to support women in healthcare leadership in developing nations with your tax deductible end-of-year gift.

I have not previously shared with our Trek Tribe that I heartily donate a significant amount of my time and resources annually to not-for-profit organizations aligned with my mission. This project involves significantly more expense with travel and materials -AND- I would love to partner with YOU in support of this highly mission-aligned project!

The Project: Support Under-Resourced Women in Leadership

I met the incredible Dr. Britney Grayson on another project during which we connected quickly in our shared vision to support women in leadership. Dr. Grayson has been training surgery and anesthesia residents from several African countries since 2020. Her research illuminates that despite women in Africa accounting for 40% of the medical student population, only 7% of the African surgical workforce is female.

In addition to this underrepresentation, they have additional challenges - not unlike the gender bias and discrimination challenging women in healthcare in the United States which research shows directly contributes to their burnout. Research also demonstrates higher prevalence of gender discrimination related burnout in surgical residency training programs.

Dr. Grayson's research of surgical and anesthesia residents in east Africa indicates:

53.1 % of female respondents stated that sometimes or often they are treated negatively by coworkers based on their gender (compared to male respondent percentage of 91.8% who endorse rarely or never)

72.4% of female respondents stated that sometimes, often or almost daily they are treated negatively by patients based on their gender (compared to male respondent percentage of 93.8% who endorse rarely or never).

Findings also noted significant discrepancies in gender-based differential treatment in the hospital (workplace) and community setting.

Having lived in West Africa myself for a few years, I am aware of the complicated factors and influences impacting not only women, but developing nations globally.

Would you partner with me?

This project is 100% aligned with what my work supports and the retreat experience I am designing for these women will:

Create a safe space to collaboratively build awareness and resource the community in addressing issues honestly and with high sensitivity to cultural context

Build healthy community among African women in leadership via sharing, networking, mentorship, peer support

Encourage residents via discovery of personal and professional strengths, recognize ways to leverage these in support of self and other; respectfully inform, train, advocate

Improve recruitment, retention, and well-being of African female surgery trainees, faculty, volunteers, leadership in helping them create burnout-prevention plans

If you would like to contribute a tax-deductible gift to support this project, please click here and choose "one time" frequency and write Project 198-Retreat Dr. Natalie in the comments block. Funds will support my transportation, assessment materials for participants and preparations for this project.

THANK YOU for your consideration of support for these incredibly high-impact and high-potential women committed to serving their communities via much-needed specialized medical training and ensuring their own well-being as they do so!

This IS exactly how High Places endeavors to equip and inspire.

TO YOUR HIGHER in 2024!
