Do You Know Your Flourishing Formula?

Flourishing 101

Last Friday evening, I gave a plenary session to almost 300 healthcare professionals ranging from medical students and early career, to mid-career and senior leaders.

My challenge to them, no matter the stage of their training or career, was to envision and write their personal flourishing formula. I thought I would invite you to do the same!

Flourishing encompasses a life well-lived. One definition states "to grow luxuriantly". It speaks to thriving, developing, and growing.

Here's my current working definition:

Flourishing is the committed pursuit and realization of consistent authentic relating to self and other from one's most valued, engaged, purposeful, honest, and wholehearted daily living in any season of summit peaks and wilderness valleys.

About 20 years ago, positive psychology recovered the term "flourishing" and developed a vast research base to support people, teams, workplaces, and communities towards recognizing and building maximal health in all domains: emotionally, physically, spiritually, psychologically.

In personal and professional relationships.

In balance.

In being whole people.

In that Friday session, I noted that caution is warranted. While pursuing flourishing includes a growth mindset and is linked to many mental and physical health benefits, it doesn't mean that we don't have times of languishing too. In fact, we can be living and pursuing flourishing AND be struggling with any number of challenges in a particular season of life.

Flourishing Self Check

Dr. Tyler VanderWeele oversees the Harvard Human Flourishing Program and his team is currently conducting a Global Flourishing Study using the following Flourishing Index Assessment .

Grab a piece of paper, or better yet, your journal, and add up your responses to each of the 12 questions below. Your final score will range from 0 to 120.

  • Happiness and Life Satisfaction
    1. Overall, how satisfied are you with your life as a whole these days?
    0 = Not Satisfied at All, 10 = Completely Satisfied
    2. In general, how happy or unhappy do you usually feel?
    0 = Extremely Unhappy, 10 = Extremely Happy
  • Mental and Physical Health
    3. In general, how would you rate your physical health?
    0 = Poor, 10 = Excellent
    4. How would you rate your overall mental health?
    0 = Poor, 10 = Excellent
  • Meaning and Purpose
    5. Overall, to what extent do you feel the things you do in your life are worthwhile?
    0 = Not at All Worthwhile, 10 = Completely Worthwhile
    6. I understand my purpose in life. 0 = Strongly Disagree, 10 = Strongly Agree
  • Character and Virtue
    7. I always act to promote good in all circumstances, even in difficult and challenging situations.
    0 = Not True, 10 = Completely True of Me
    8. I am always able to give up some happiness now for greater happiness later.
    0 = Not True of Me, 10 = Completely True of Me
  • Close Social Relationships
    9. I am content with my friendships and relationships.
    0 = Strongly Disagree, 10 = Strongly Agree
    10. My relationships are as satisfying as I would want them to be.
    0 = Strongly Disagree, 10 = Strongly Agree
  • Financial and Material Stability
    11. How often do you worry about being able to meet normal monthly living expenses?
    0 = Worry All of the Time, 10 = Do Not Ever Worry
    12. How often do you worry about safety, food, or housing?
    0 = Worry All of the Time, 10 = Do Not Ever Worry

To calculate your flourishing score, you simply need to add up the responses from the first five domains. To calculate a score of what the author terms “Secure Flourishing” you can simply add the responses from the sixth domain. It provides a total score between 0 (no flourishing whatsoever) to 120 (maximum flourishing; VanderWeele, 2017).

What did you discover?

Flourishing Formula Components

As you consider your Flourishing here and now, you might consider the following factors I've adapted from the research to support your own wholehearted and luxuriant growth.

Choose ONE or TWO and spend some time reflecting on how that component might be more realized in your own life. Write down one sentence to make it actionable.

  • Meaning and purpose in my life
  • Where I have or want to grow autonomy
  • Self-acceptance
  • Optimism
  • Positive relationships
  • Mastery of a skill
  • Self-determination
  • Thinking patterns that are holding me back
  • Emotion patterns that are holding me back
  • Personal growth and development opportunity
  • A hobby or pursuit I love to do
  • Self-confidence
